Mdina sits on a hill in the centre of Malta, a fortified medieval town with narrow streets and few inhabitants; the old capital has views across the whole island and was a filming location for Game of Thrones, Gladiator and Troy. Rabat, just south of Mdina, has star-shaped streets, traditional wooden balconies, and the Domus Romana — a 1st-century villa with Roman mosaics — plus Saint Paul's Catacombs from the 3rd century. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua) sit directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta; they're pieces of living history kept alive by centuries of preservation, and you can take a gondola around the harbours if you want. Marsaxlokk is a fishing village where traditional luzzus — the colorful Maltese boats — line the sheltered inner harbour, and a parish church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary sits in the background.
