The experience
Three hours gets you either the North or the South of Malta: your choice at booking. The North route takes in Mdina, the walled medieval city lit by lamplight and known as the silent city, then climbs to Dingli Cliffs at 253 metres, the island's highest point with views across to Filfla and the Mediterranean. From there you drop down to Ta' Qali Crafts Village to watch glassblowing and browse handmade ornaments and jewellery, then see the Mosta Dome, a rotunda so massive it ranks third largest in Europe. The South route instead heads to Valletta, then the fishing village of Marsaxlokk with its daily market and harbourside restaurants, and finishes at either the Blue Grotto (a natural cave where sunlight bounces off submerged plants to turn the water phosphorescent blue), or Hagar Qim, temples built between 3600 and 3200 BC and still standing as a masterpiece of prehistoric stone work.
The five-hour tour weaves both routes together, so you see more of the island in a single day. Your driver is experienced and shares his knowledge as you go. This isn't a formal guided tour, but someone who loves talking about Malta's history and culture. You can ask to stop anywhere along the way to take pictures. The route is yours to shape. The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats your group privately, so there's no waiting for other passengers or following a fixed schedule beyond the hours you've booked.
Entry to any site costs extra and is your choice. You're not locked into visiting everything listed. Boat trips to the Blue Grotto or other water access also run separately. Families with infants can bring a pram or request a specialized infant seat.
