The experience
You start at the base with a briefing on the route and Mellieħa itself, then head out on your own quad bike behind a guide who leads on a separate one. The ride takes you through Selmun and past Imġiebaħ Bay, then inland to Fort Campbell, a former British fortress where you stop for 20–30 minutes. From there you pass through Manikata toward the Popeye Village Viewport, which overlooks both the west and east coasts and the film set. It's a natural photo stop. The trail continues past Mellieħa Bay and climbs to Saint Agatha's Tower, also called the Red Tower (a large bastioned watchtower built between 1647 and 1649), where you'll have another 20–30 minutes to explore and shoot photos.
After the Red Tower you ride on to Armier Bay, where you have free time for a swim if you want one (this stop runs during the summer season and depends on weather). The route then takes you past the Chapel of Immaculate Conception, a tiny chapel perched on a promontory with views over the Mediterranean. Note that it may not be open for entry. You finish with a drive through Mellieħa Village Square before heading back to base, where your transfer is waiting to take you back to your original pickup point.
Drivers must be at least 21 with a valid driving licence and a second form of ID (original passport or identity card required). Passengers can be as young as five. You'll sign an indemnity form and leave a credit card as a guarantee for the insurance excess (€300–€400 per quad bike if there's damage). Helmets are provided and mandatory for both driver and passenger. The guide sets the pace and you follow. Racing, overtaking and dangerous manoeuvres are not allowed. Pickup time can fall anywhere from 30 to 105 minutes before the tour start, depending on where you're staying, so confirm the exact time with the operator a few days ahead.
Is this one for you?Choose the shared quad option if you want to bring a friend or family member along as a passenger. Choose the single quad if you prefer to ride solo. The four-hour duration means you'll cover the main landmarks (Fort Campbell, the Red Tower, and the Popeye Village viewpoint) without a rushed pace, and the guide leading on a separate bike sets a steady speed you can follow.
