The Experience

The first thing I remember is our guide, Azlan, waving from the car outside our hotel — he had this easy smile that made us relax right away. We’d barely buckled up before he asked if we wanted to see Kek Lok Si or head straight for breakfast. (We chose noodles. No regrets.) The air was sticky but full of fried garlic smells drifting out of little kopitiams along the way. Azlan kept tossing in small stories — like how his grandmother still leaves oranges at the temple during Chinese New Year — and it felt less like a tour and more like tagging along with someone who knows every shortcut in Penang.

Kek Lok Si Temple was bigger than I’d pictured. Lanterns everywhere, some faded from sun, others bright red like they’d just been hung up. There was a woman sweeping incense ash off the steps who nodded when I tried to say “terima kasih” (probably butchered it). Azlan pointed out where you could see all of George Town through a haze of heat — honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so quiet standing there. We wandered through gardens thick with frangipani and then hopped back into the car for Penang Hill.

The funicular ride up Penang Hill was kind of surreal — windows fogged up halfway but you could still catch glimpses of old colonial houses hidden by trees. Up top it was cooler, breezy enough that I wished I’d brought something with sleeves. There were monkeys somewhere in the canopy (heard them but never saw), and Azlan showed us which plants locals use for cooking laksa. He laughed when my friend tried to pronounce “asam” — apparently we both need practice.

Lunch at New World Park Hawker Center was chaos in the best way: metal spoons clattering, aunties shouting orders, steam rising off bowls of curry mee. We tried char koay teow because Azlan swore his cousin’s stall made the best one (can’t prove otherwise). After that we drifted through George Town’s street art alleys — kids on bikes painted right onto crumbling walls, people stopping for photos or just pausing to look. It felt like the city was letting us peek behind its usual face for a bit.
