The experience

We were already halfway up the hill when our guide, Hafiz, pointed out the way the morning mist clings to the roofs below. It was Penang Hill, he called it Bukit Bendera, and honestly, I didn’t expect the funicular to be so steep. The carriage windows fogged up from everyone’s breath and someone’s leftover kaya toast (sweet coconut smell, kind of comforting). At the top, there was this hush over the trees that made me want to just stand there for a minute and not talk. Hafiz let us take our time, no rush at all, which I appreciated more than I realized.

Later we wandered through George Town. The street art is everywhere, but not in a forced way: kids cycling on walls, an old uncle painted next to his real-life doppelganger selling ice cream. Something about seeing people quietly lighting candles or tying ribbons made me slow down too.
