The Experience

The funicular train climbs Penang Hill in about fifteen minutes, and the view hits you all at once — George Town spreads below like a map someone unfolded just for you. Your driver-guide meets you at your George Town hotel and handles the route to the base station, so you're not navigating or timing anything yourself. The train car is small, old-fashioned in the best way, and the air cools as you rise.

Kek Lok Si Temple comes next, and it's larger than most people expect — the seven-story pagoda holds three architectural styles stacked on top of each other, Chinese at the base, Burmese in the middle, Thai at the top. The bronze Kuan Yin statue dominates the upper levels, and the temple grounds are quiet enough that you can actually hear the wind move through the courtyards. There's a Liberation Pool where turtles float, and if you're hungry, hawker stalls near the entrance sell snacks without the tourist markup. Your guide knows which ones are worth stopping at.

After lunch — the tour includes Penang's famous Assam Laksa, the sour fish noodle soup that tastes nothing like what you'd expect and everything like what locals eat every day — you head to Pulau Tikus to visit three more temples in quick succession. The Reclining Buddha at Chayamangkalaram Temple is the world's third-longest, stretched out in a pose that somehow looks both peaceful and monumental. The Burmese Temple next door has a completely different energy, with dragons that don't look like the Chinese ones across the street, and the Guardian of the World statue stands watch over a fountain where people toss coins for luck. By the time your driver brings you back to your hotel, you've moved through four temples and a hilltop without once having to figure out which bus to catch or where to turn.
