Summary

Walk Baalbek’s stones, taste Ksara wine, feel Anjar’s echoes

You’ll sip coffee before sunrise in Beirut, walk among ancient ruins at Baalbek and Anjar with a local guide who knows every story, then taste wine deep inside Ksara’s Roman caves. Expect warm bread at lunch, laughter on dusty roads, and moments of quiet awe—plus hotel pickup so you can just watch Lebanon roll by your window.

Someone hands me a tiny cup of cardamom coffee as we wait for the van outside the hotel in Beirut—our driver just grins and says “you’ll need it.” The road out to Anjar is all olive trees and faded signs, and I keep thinking how Lebanon changes every hour. In Anjar, our guide (I think his name was Samir?) points at the old Umayyad city walls—he tells us about caliphs and traders but I’m mostly distracted by the way sunlight hits the broken columns. There’s this faint smell of wild thyme in the air. We wander through what used to be palaces and hammams; at one point a local kid waves at us from behind a stone arch. I try to picture life here when these streets were busy. Harder than I thought.

Baalbek is next—about an hour away, not that I was counting because honestly my head was still full of those arches. The temples here are massive, like you can’t really get it until you’re standing under Jupiter’s columns. Samir laughs when I ask if people ever get lost in here (“only if you’re looking for Bacchus’ wine,” he says). The stones are warm from the sun; there’s this dry dust that clings to your shoes and makes everything look older than it already is. We stop for lunch after—somewhere nearby, nothing fancy but the bread is still warm and someone pours us arak with a wink. I didn’t expect to enjoy that part so much.

We end up at Chateau Ksara in the afternoon—the drive there is all vineyards and sleepy villages. Inside the old Roman caves it’s cool and smells like earth and oak barrels; our host lets us try three different wines (I liked the red best but don’t ask me to pronounce its name). Bottles line the walls like they’ve been waiting centuries for someone to open them. Everyone gets a little quieter down there, maybe because of the echo or maybe just tiredness—I still think about that silence sometimes on busy days back home.
