The experience
The truck picks you up at your hotel at 9:00 am and drives you and the bikes to Ban Tanmixay Village, where the cycling starts. From there you ride through rice fields with the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area mountains on your right, moving away from the city noise into the landscape around Vientiane. The first real stop is the Nam Ngum River at River Time Resort, where you board a ferry for about 30 minutes downstream to Ban Thadindeng, a Hmong village you explore on foot before cycling again through dirt roads and more rice fields.
After passing Ban Thakai, you reach Ban Tontam for a picnic lunch in the village's "Sala" (a traditional meeting hall) with a pond and the Phou Khao Khouay mountain range as the backdrop. The afternoon continues on bike to Ban Thakokhai, then another ferry crossing of the Nam Ngum River. The final stop is Ban Pako Resort, where a boat takes you upstream to Ban Somesamai. If time allows, you visit Wat Veunphan Temple across the water before the truck returns you to your hotel by 5:00 pm. The tour runs 8 hours total and includes high-quality mountain bikes, helmets, drinking water, and lunch.

Is this one for you?Small groups of up to seven work best here, and the mix of biking, villages and water crossings suits travelers who want to move through the landscape rather than stop in one place. The 8-hour day with a guide and set itinerary means you don't plan the route yourself. The ferry rides and village visits are built in, so you experience both the cycling and the slower moments of the day.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between the cycling and the ferry parts of this tour?
You bike through rice fields and villages for most of the day, but two ferry rides break up the cycling: one 30-minute crossing down the Nam Ngum River to reach Ban Thadindeng, and another crossing later to get back across the river toward Ban Pako Resort.
Do I need to be fit to do this biking tour?
Moderate fitness is recommended, but the tour suits all physical fitness levels. The pace is set by the group, and you stop frequently to explore villages and rest at the river.
What does the picnic lunch include?
Lunch is served at Ban Tontam village in the meeting hall, surrounded by a pond and mountains. The operator includes the meal. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase separately.
How many people go on this tour together?
Groups are small, with a maximum of 7 people per booking and a minimum of 2 required. An English-speaking guide leads the entire day.
What happens if I'm not comfortable swimming or crossing water?
The ferry rides are short boat crossings on the Nam Ngum River. You sit in the boat and do not enter the water. The tour is designed around these crossings, so they are part of the day's route.
