The experience
If you've got a free day in Luang Prabang and want to do something with your hands instead of just watching, this class starts in a rustic pavilion overlooking rice fields where you'll learn why bamboo matters so much to Lao life. You'll weave a souvenir mat using strips of bamboo and a technique that's been practiced for centuries, then move into the cooking part: you'll make dishes like bamboo shoot soup, steamed fish in banana leaf with herbs, and bamboo shoot dip. Everything you cook becomes lunch, eaten on the pavilion terrace with views back across the fields.
After the class, the day moves to Kuang Si waterfalls, where you can swim in the turquoise pool and spend time at the sun bear sanctuary inside the falls grounds. The whole day runs about eight hours from pickup at your hotel. An English-speaking guide leads both the class and the waterfall portion, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles transport between the pavilion and the falls.
