The experience
The pavilion is modeled on a traditional Lao house and sits next to rice fields in a semi-rural setting just outside Luang Prabang town. You start with an introduction to bamboo's role in Lao culture (how the plant shows up in household items across rural dwellings), then move into the weaving station. Using a technique practiced for centuries, you'll weave a souvenir mat from bamboo strips, working at your own pace in a relaxed setting.
The cooking class follows, and bamboo is the star ingredient. You'll prepare dishes like bamboo shoot soup, stuffed bamboo shoot with minced pork, fish wrapped in banana leaf, and stir-fried bamboo shoot with minced pork. The guide walks you through each step, and the meal you cook becomes your lunch. You eat on the pavilion terrace with views back toward the rice fields.
Round-trip transfers from your hotel are included, and the whole experience runs about four hours. The guide speaks English throughout both the weaving and cooking sections.
