The experience

Your hotel pickup arrives before the drive to The Bamboo Experience, a traditional Lao house pavilion set next to working rice fields. The session opens with an introduction to bamboo's role in Lao culture: how the plant shows up in everything from household tools to building materials in rural dwellings. You move straight into the weaving: strips of bamboo, a simple loom, and a technique that has stayed unchanged for centuries. By the end of the activity you'll have woven a mat to take home.

The cooking class follows. You'll work through preparing a traditional Lao dinner where bamboo shoot is the central ingredient, learning how it's used in the local kitchen. The meal you cook becomes the one you eat, served on the pavilion terrace where you can look out over the semi-rural landscape. The whole experience (weaving, cooking, eating) takes about four hours, and a guide in English walks you through both activities.
