The experience
The Namkhan sits on the Khan River just outside Luang Prabang, and the workshop happens right there on the grounds. A local basket weaver walks you through the fundamentals of bamboo weaving, showing you how the craft has shaped Lao life for centuries. You'll work with bamboo to construct your own tea filter (the kind people actually use to brew loose leaf tea), and by the end of the session you'll have made something functional you can take with you or use that afternoon.
The class runs 90 minutes and includes a homemade welcome drink when you arrive, a stroll through the resort's gardens, and hands-on instruction at a pace that works for beginners. After the weaving workshop ends, you spend the rest of your afternoon at The Namkhan's facilities. The resort has a beach alongside the river, so you can swim, relax or explore the grounds. Organic teas grown on the eco-farm are part of the experience, so you'll taste what the region produces and understand what your filter is made to brew.
The guide speaks English, French or Thai depending on your group, and the workshop welcomes children from age 6 onward. No weaving experience is necessary. The instruction starts from scratch and assumes you've never held a piece of bamboo before.
