The experience

The morning starts at your hotel with a 40-minute drive west to Ban Pak Si village and a family farm on the riverbank. The host walks you through the garden to pick fresh ingredients, then you move into the kitchen to help make salad, pork laap, sticky rice and other Lao staples. You cook alongside the family, learn how they use what grows around them, and then sit down to eat the lunch you've prepared at the farm.

After eating, your guide leads you onto the path that local farmers use every day to reach their fields. The one-hour walk takes you through the countryside toward Kuang Si Falls, passing through villages and farmland rather than following a marked tourist trail. When you reach the falls, you can swim in the turquoise pool, wade in the shallows or simply explore the rock formations and surrounding forest. There's free time here to move at your own pace.

Before heading back to Luang Prabang, you'll visit a nearby bear sanctuary that rescues animals from traders and deforested areas. The return journey includes stops for photos of the countryside and villages if you want them. You arrive back at your hotel in the late afternoon.
