The day starts with pickup from your Luang Prabang hotel at 9am and a drive to the dock, where you board a traditional wooden boat for the journey upriver along the Mekong. The Pak Ou Caves sit high in a limestone cliff face overlooking the water; you climb a white-washed staircase to reach the upper and lower caverns. Inside, hundreds of Buddha statues fill the chambers—some intact, others missing hands or faces, a few tilted sideways or replaced by newer versions. The statues vary in size, material and age, and the wear on them is visible; wandering through takes time, and most visitors spend at least an hour exploring both levels.

After the caves, you return to the boat and head back downriver for lunch (included). The afternoon shift takes you to Kuang Si Waterfall, where water cascades down a series of pools in shades of turquoise and blue. The falls have carved deep travertine formations into the stone over time. The pools grow larger as you move downstream, and the ones at the base are deep enough to swim in—locals have built a wooden platform for viewing or jumping, depending on how the heat moves you.
