The experience
The tour starts with airport pickup and a half-day in Bishkek itself: Ala-Too Square, Victory Square with its yurt-shaped monument, the sprawling Osh Bazaar where you'll walk past dried fruits and textiles, and the National Museum if time allows. That evening you sleep in a modern hotel near the city center. The real journey begins the next morning when you leave the capital behind.
Day two takes you southeast through the Kalmak Ashuu Pass into the alpine zone, stopping at Burana Tower (an 11th-century minaret from the ancient city of Balasagun where you can climb for views across the Tian Shan Mountains), and the felt-making workshops of Kochkor village. By afternoon you reach Song-Kul Lake, a 3,016-meter alpine plateau ringed by grazing herds and endless steppe. You sleep in a yurt at Muras Yurt Camp, where stargazing is part of the night. Day three descends into the Naryn region through the winding 33 Parrots Pass, named for its switchbacks visible from above. Lunch happens in Naryn city itself, then you continue into the remote Ak-Sai Valley to a high-altitude yurt camp near Kel-Suu at 3,400 meters.
Day four is the centerpiece: a 2.5- to 3-hour horseback ride or hike through rugged terrain to Kel-Suu Lake, where limestone cliffs frame emerald water and you can rent a local boat to explore between the rocks. This is one of Central Asia's most isolated alpine lakes, and the journey there is as raw as the destination. You return to Naryn city by afternoon and sleep in a hotel with hot water and Wi-Fi. The final day retraces west through Dolon Pass and Kok-Moinok Canyon (a red-sandstone formation that resembles a miniature Grand Canyon) with a lunch stop in Kochkor before the evening drop-off in Bishkek. Breakfasts come at the guesthouses and yurt camps. Lunches and dinners are provided at 800 som per person, with the option to order additional items (except alcohol) at your own cost.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Arabic, Russian and Turkish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (3 to 12 years): free; Infant (under 3): free.
What's the horseback ride to Kel-Suu Lake actually like?
The ride or hike to Kel-Suu takes 2.5 to 3 hours one-way through mountain terrain, ending at one of Central Asia's most remote alpine lakes. The emerald water sits among limestone cliffs, and depending on the water level, you can rent a local boat to explore between the rocks. It's a full-day excursion, with the return journey in the afternoon.
Do I need horseback riding experience to do this tour?
No. The tour offers both horseback and hiking options to Kel-Suu, so you can choose based on your comfort level. The guide will help you decide on the day itself.
What are the yurts like, and how cold does it get?
The yurts are traditional nomadic dwellings with blankets and heating available. Song-Kul sits at 3,016 meters and Kel-Suu at 3,400 meters, so nights are cold even in summer. The camps provide what you need to stay warm, though the experience is basic and authentic rather than luxurious.
Is the 33 Parrots Pass a difficult drive?
The 33 Parrots Pass is a winding mountain road with switchbacks that resemble a trail of parrots from above. It's a photo stop and scenic viewpoint rather than a difficult section. The drive is dramatic but manageable, and you'll see vast highland panoramas from the pass.
What's included in meals, and can I eat vegetarian?
Breakfasts are included at the guesthouses and yurt camps. Lunches and dinners cost 800 som per person and are provided. You can order additional items at your own cost (alcohol excluded). Traditional Kyrgyz cuisine includes beshbarmak, manty, and lagman. Dietary preferences can be discussed with your guide.
How much time do we spend driving versus hiking or exploring?
Days two through five involve a mix of driving between regions and stops for exploration: the Burana Tower climb, felt workshops, the 33 Parrots Pass viewpoint, the full day to Kel-Suu by horse or foot, and the Kok-Moinok Canyon walk. Day one is mostly city sightseeing and transfer. The balance shifts toward active exploration as the tour progresses into the highlands.
