The experience
Your guide meets you at your hotel in Bishkek on day one and drives you to the Burana Tower in Tokmok, where you climb to the top and explore ancient mausoleums, buildings and artifacts in the open-air museum. The route then follows the Chu river through Boom Gorge to the lakeshore village of Bokonbaeva, birthplace of eagle hunting. There you meet a Berkutchi, an eagle owner, and watch a live hunting show with the golden eagle flying, catching prey, and diving. You take pictures with the bird and try an archery masterclass before settling into a yurt camp on the shore of Issyk Kul Lake for the night.
Day two moves east along the lake to Skazka Canyon, where wind-carved rock formations resemble the Great Wall of China, mythical creatures and castles in shades of red and gray. You then drive into Barskoon Valley to see a chain of three waterfalls surrounded by spruce forest, and continue to Jeti Oguz Gorge, famous for its seven bull-shaped sandstone formations and the "broken heart" rock. The itinerary offers optional horseback riding for 3–4 hours through Kok-Zhaik valley to its waterfall. That evening you soak in natural hot springs near Karakol and sleep in a 3-star hotel.
Day three is the Altyn Arashan leg. A Russian military vehicle takes you 2.5 hours from Karakol through rugged mountain paths into an alpine valley ringed by peaks. You hike the trails around Altyn Arashan (difficulty varies but views are consistent), then relax in the thermal hot springs, which are known for their healing qualities. The return drive to Karakol lets you absorb more of the landscape before your hotel night.
On day four, your guide leads you through Karakol's history: the Dungan Mosque, Russian Orthodox Church, and Bugu Bazaar. You then explore Grigoriev and Semenov Gorges, where red poppies cover the slopes and mountain streams run through spruce forest. Horseback riding is available here too. You sail on Issyk Kul Lake itself before visiting the Ruh Ordo Cultural Complex and ancient petroglyphs. The tour ends with drop-off at your Bishkek hotel.
