Step-by-step itinerary
Snorkeling and Mida Creek tour
- Snorkel at Watamu Marine Park
- Cruise to Mida Creek mangrove reserve
- Lunch on WakaWaka Island
The experience
The day starts in Watamu Marine National Park, established in 1968 and home to coral gardens that support over 600 species of fish and other sea creatures. You enter the water with snorkeling gear and move through the gardens at your own pace, watching schools of colorful fish navigate the coral. If you prefer to stay dry, the boat has a glass bottom so you can observe the same fish from above the surface without getting in.
After snorkeling, the boat heads into Mida Creek, a protected government reserve and one of the most productive mangrove ecosystems on earth. You cruise past small islands and sandbanks where the mangrove landscape overlaps the water, then stop between the atolls in front of Garoda beach. The creek's unique ecosystem (shaped by the natural rift of Midas about 5 km south of Watamu) supports fauna and flora you won't see anywhere else on the Kenyan coast. A local guide narrates the journey and explains what makes this stretch of water so different from the reef you left behind.
Lunch is seafood served on WakaWaka Island: lobster, shrimp, and fish prepared fresh. The full outing runs 6 to 7 hours from hotel pickup to return. A guide fluent in English, Italian, French or German leads the group. Bottled water and soda are provided throughout the day.
