Kayaking adventure in Mida Creek

  • Safety brief and gear up at Mkoko Explorers
  • Transport to Debaso village launch site
  • Kayak through Mida Creek mangrove channels
  • Return to Mkoko Explorers in Watamu

The experience

How much of Mida Creek can you actually reach on your own? The answer is: none of it safely without a guide who knows the channels, the tides and the wildlife. You start at the Mkoko Explorers shop on Turtle Bay Road for a safety brief and to choose your kayak, then ride in the tour van to Debaso village where the launch site sits. The whole route (van ride, paddle, return) takes three hours, and the van picks you up from your accommodation within Watamu and brings you back the same way.

Once on the water, you paddle silently through mangrove channels where kingfishers and fish eagles hunt overhead. The guide points out ancient baobab trees, hidden lagoons where traditional dhows sheltered, and the mangrove ecology itself: how the trees filter saltwater, why they matter to fish populations, and what conservation efforts protect this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The pace is gentle. The water is calm enough for first-time kayakers, and the guide stays close to answer questions and watch for wildlife.

Safety is woven into every step. Life jackets are mandatory on the water. Your guide is fully licensed, trained in first aid, and carries first aid supplies. The tour operator carries full insurance. You bring a refillable water bottle (or use theirs) and fill it from a chilled dispenser before you leave. Waterproof bags protect phones and cameras. All entrance and community fees are included in the price, so there are no surprises at the launch site.
