The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a ride to the dhow: a traditional glass-bottomed sailing boat that local guides have operated for years. Once on the water, you'll watch for dolphins as the boat moves through Watamu Marine Park. Spotting them in season is nearly guaranteed, and when they appear alongside the dhow, the moment lands differently than any photo. The boat itself becomes part of the rhythm: no engine noise, just the sail and the crew's knowledge of where the animals move.
Snorkeling happens in Watamu Marine Reserve, where the water clarity lets you see down to coral gardens, sea turtles grazing on seagrass, and schools of reef fish in colors that don't need embellishment. The equipment is provided and fitted before you enter. A guide stays in the water with you. Between snorkeling sessions, there's time to rest on the boat or simply float and watch the reserve. Fishing happens too if the conditions allow it. Something to do with your hands while the boat drifts.
Lunch arrives on a remote sandbank: fresh seafood, tropical fruit, cold drinks, and space to swim or lie in the sun without the boat's schedule pressing. The sandbank itself is the kind of place that exists only at certain tides, which is why the timing of the day matters. After lunch, the return includes a stop at a nearby island before the boat heads back to shore. The whole outing runs six hours from pickup to drop-off.

Is this one for you? You're snorkeling yourself, not watching from a boat. The guide is in the water with you, which suits anyone who wants to move through the reef at their own pace without a crowd. The shared dhow and sandbank mean you'll meet other travelers, but the snorkeling groups stay small enough that the guide can keep an eye on everyone.
