Spot black rhinos and lions on a 4-hour game drive through open grassland

A half-day safari tour in Nairobi National Park starting with hotel pickup at 6 AM, followed by a 4-hour game drive in a 4x4 vehicle with a professional English-speaking guide. You'll search for black rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest across wide plains dotted with acacia bush, plus over 400 recorded bird species. The park's open southeast border creates a wildlife corridor during seasonal rains. The tour also includes the ivory burning site monument and walking trails at hippo pools, with hotel drop-off after the drive. Total time is around 5 hours. Early morning or late afternoon departures offer the best wildlife activity.

Step-by-step itinerary

Morning game drive at Nairobi National Park

  • Pickup at hotel at 6 AM
  • Drive to Nairobi National Park
  • 4-hour game drive in the park
  • See wildlife including rhinos and lions
  • Visit ivory burning site and hippo pools
  • Return to Nairobi hotel

The experience

The 4x4 van picks you up at your hotel at 6 AM (or a different early morning or late afternoon time if you prefer), and drives you to Nairobi National Park, arriving by 6:30 AM. Wildlife is most active during these cooler hours, which is why the operator recommends them over midday. You'll spend the next four hours on the game drive itself, scanning the wide grassland and scattered acacia bush for the animals the park is known for: the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes and giraffes. The backdrop of Nairobi's city skyline sits across the plains, a reminder you're doing this within sight of the capital.

The park's southeast border is open to wildlife, creating a natural corridor for animals migrating during the rains, so what you see shifts with the season. Your guide will also point out the over 400 bird species recorded in the park. Between the main game drive, you'll visit the ivory burning site monument and walk the trails around the hippo pools: quieter moments to stretch and look for wildlife on foot. Water is provided throughout.

After the 4-hour drive ends, you head back to Nairobi and get dropped at your hotel. The whole outing runs about 5 hours door to door. If you want to add a stop at the Giraffe Center or David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, let the operator know when you book and they can arrange it.

Is this one for you?Book the early morning 6 AM departure if you want the highest chance of seeing active wildlife. The late afternoon option works just as well if that time fits your schedule better. Either way, the fixed timing is what lets the guide position you during the hours when animals are moving and feeding.
