3D projections and holograms bring Fort Jesus to life across four centuries
The Fort Jesus Sound and Light Show is a 40-minute multimedia experience in Mombasa that projects the fort's 400-year history onto its walls using 3D mapping, lasers and holograms, followed by a candlelit night tour of the site and a pyrotechnics finale. The show runs two hours total and includes snacks. A live English-speaking guide leads the experience, and children from age 1 are welcome.
Step-by-step itinerary
Fort Jesus Sound and Light Show

- Enjoy grand finale fireworks
- Take night tour of Fort Jesus

The Experience
The show itself runs 40 minutes and moves through Fort Jesus from the 15th century to the present day, with 3D projections and laser work synchronized to tell the fort's story across its actual walls and courtyards. The production was designed by a duo of master pyrotechnicians and projection artists based in Nairobi who have worked on Hollywood productions and Disney projects. After the multimedia portion ends, you walk the fort by candlelight—over 500 candles and custom lighting set up throughout the structure—which is the only experience of its kind at any African World Heritage Site. The evening closes with a fireworks display.
The full experience takes two hours from start to finish. You'll need to be comfortable standing and moving through the fort's corridors and courtyards during both the projection show and the night tour; the site is wheelchair accessible, and infants can stay in a pram or stroller. Snacks are provided. A live guide in English walks you through the experience, and the show is suitable for all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with epilepsy due to the projection effects.
