The Experience

The day starts at 8 am with pickup from your hotel or port, then heads straight to Fort Jesus. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century on a coral ridge at the harbor entrance, the fort was designed to protect Portuguese settlers on the East African coast. It has weathered centuries of conflict—Omani Arabs besieged it from 1696 to 1698, British soldiers used it as barracks between 1837 and 1895, and it later became a prison. Today it stands as one of the region's most important historical landmarks, and you'll walk through it with a guide who explains its layered past.

From the fort, the tour moves into Old Mombasa Town itself, threading through a maze of cobbled narrow streets lined with ancient mosques, residential houses with overhanging balconies, and mysterious doorways that open onto bustling markets. You'll pass through the Elephant Tusks monument on Moi Avenue and stop at the Akamba woodcarvers' workshop to watch artisans at work and browse local crafts. The guide introduces you to the old town's culture and heritage while you navigate the spice, fruit and fabric vendors filling the market stalls.

After a lunch break (at a restaurant of your choice, at your own cost), the afternoon takes you to Haller Park, a former quarry that has been reforested into a nature sanctuary. The park hosts hippos, giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, crocodiles, smaller mammals and birds across several zones: a game sanctuary, reptile park, fish farm demonstration area, palm garden, crocodile pens and a giraffe viewing platform. The site draws over 160,000 visitors annually and offers enough variety to spend several hours exploring. You'll be dropped back at your hotel or port by late afternoon.
