The Experience

If you've just landed in Mombasa or have a free morning before the rest of your trip, this tour fills the gap without eating your whole day. You'll start at Fort Jesus, where the guide gives you the history of the Portuguese fortress built in 1593 and explains why UNESCO classified it as a World Heritage site in 2011. From there, the route takes you through the Old Town's narrow streets—the kind that open onto courtyards and reveal the Swahili and Arab architecture the guide points out as you walk. You'll pass the remains of the old historic Port of Mombasa and reach the Spice Market, built by the English in 1914, where the air changes and you can see the legumes, fruits and spices laid out in the stalls.

The four gigantic elephant tusks are the landmark most visitors photograph—they were erected in 1952 for the arrival of the Queen of England and they stand at the heart of the city. You'll also stop at the Hindu temple in Mombasa. Transport is by tuk-tuk, which is how you move between the stops without the walking becoming one long stretch; the guide is live and speaks English or French. The whole thing runs three to four hours, which means you're back by early afternoon if you start in the morning.

Fort Jesus admission costs extra (KSH 1,200) and you choose it at checkout—the tour covers the exterior and the guide's history of the site, but entry to walk inside the fortress walls is optional.
