The Experience

So you've got a week and you want to actually see wildlife without spending a month's salary — this is the move. The safari starts at 8am from your Nairobi hotel and heads straight to Amboseli National Park, where the first thing you notice is Mount Kilimanjaro sitting there like it owns the place. It does, kind of. The park's got over 400 bird species and herds of elephants that'll make you understand why people come back to Kenya again and again. You're staying at Nyati Camp, which is right there in the park, so you're not wasting time on drives — you roll out for afternoon game viewing the same day you arrive, then do full morning and afternoon drives the next day with lunch back at camp.

Day three you leave early for Lake Nakuru, a few hours' drive north. The lake's a rhino sanctuary now — over 40 black rhinos and 60 white rhinos — but the flamingos are what stop you mid-breath. Some days there are almost 2 million of them, and they turn the whole shoreline this deep pink that doesn't look real until you're standing there. You get the afternoon to explore the park from City Max Hotel, then it's another early start toward Masai Mara on day four. This is where the safari gets serious. The Mara has everything: elephants, buffalo, giraffe, lions, cheetahs, leopards hiding in thickets, hippos in the river, crocodiles that look prehistoric. Over 450 bird species too, if you're keeping count. You're at Enchoro Wildlife Camp, and you've got two full days here — one with a packed lunch served picnic-style in the park, the other completely open for game drives or, if you want to spend extra, a hot air balloon ride at sunrise.

On the final morning you drive back to Nairobi, and there's lunch waiting at the Carnivore restaurant when you arrive — a proper send-off before you head to your hotel or the airport depending on your flight. Your driver-guide handles all the navigation and knows where the animals are, which takes the guesswork out of it. The whole thing is built around budget accommodations, so you're not paying for luxury you don't need, just solid places to sleep near the parks so you maximize daylight hours actually looking at wildlife.
