The Experience

The start of our Maasai Mara safari didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped—my alarm never went off, so I was half-dressed and clutching a coffee when the driver called from the lobby. He just grinned and said, “Hakuna matata, we have time.” That set the tone for the next three days: things might not be perfect, but somehow they just work out here. We left Nairobi before sunrise in a sturdy 4WD jeep, passing roadside stalls and kids waving at us through dusty windows. The air changed after the Rift Valley viewpoint—crisper, with a hint of woodsmoke and something sweet I couldn’t place.

Our guide, Joseph, had this way of spotting animals long before anyone else did. He’d slow down suddenly and point—“See there? Lioness under that acacia.” Sometimes it took me a minute to find what he saw. The first evening game drive in the Maasai Mara Reserve felt like stepping into someone else’s dream: wildebeest everywhere, zebras flicking their tails, a line of elephants moving quietly across gold grass. At one point we stopped near the Mara River where hippos lounged in muddy water—one snorted so loudly I jumped and everyone laughed (including Joseph). Lunches were picnic style under a lone tree, sandwiches tasting better than they had any right to after hours bouncing along red dirt tracks.

I didn’t expect to sleep so well in those big canvas tents at Rhino Tourist Camp—the beds were softer than my own at home. Nights were full of strange sounds: distant hyenas whooping, someone singing softly somewhere beyond the camp fence. On our last morning we visited a Maasai village (optional but worth it), where kids practiced their English on us and an elder showed how to make fire with sticks—my attempt was hopeless but they cheered anyway. There was this smell of earth and smoke clinging to my clothes after.

The drive back to Nairobi felt quieter; maybe everyone was tired or just letting it all sink in. We stopped for lunch at some roadside motel—simple food but honestly I barely noticed what I ate because my head was still full of that endless sky over the savanna. I keep thinking about that lioness Joseph spotted first; how she looked right through us like she knew something we didn’t.
