The experience

The route runs from Malindi inland to Tsavo East, a two-hour drive that lands you at the lodge by lunchtime on day one. After lunch you head straight out on an evening game drive, which is when the park's animals are most active. You stay at your choice of five lodges (Voi Wildlife Lodge, Voi Safari Lodge, Ashnil Aruba, Sentrim Camp or Satao Safari Camp) each positioned to reach different parts of the park.

Day two centers on Lugards Falls, a site where elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, antelopes and leopards gather around the water. The game drive timing and route are set by your guide based on where animals are moving that day. Day three starts before dawn with an early breakfast and a final game drive until 10am, then the drive back to Malindi with a lunch stop before you reach the beach hotels by afternoon.

The minivan or Jeep stays yours for the full three days, so the pace, stops and photo time are yours to direct. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of three other languages, and the route covers terrain that works for all fitness levels. Pickup from your Malindi hotel is included, and all transport within the park runs as part of the booking.

Is this one for you?Private travel suits travelers who want to set their own pace and timing within the park, rather than follow a group schedule. The three-day length gives you two full days on game drives instead of rushing through in a single afternoon, so you see more animals and have time to linger at sightings.

What animals will I actually see on a 3-day Tsavo East safari?

Tsavo East's game drives regularly turn up elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos, warthogs and birds. Lugards Falls on day two is a reliable spot because animals come to drink there, especially in the dry season.

How does the pickup from Malindi work?

The minivan or Jeep collects you from your Malindi hotel at 8am on day one and drives two hours to Tsavo East, arriving in time for lunch at the lodge. On day three, after the morning game drive, you drive back to Malindi and are dropped at your hotel by early afternoon.

Which lodge will I stay at?

You choose from five lodges in Tsavo East: Voi Wildlife Lodge, Voi Safari Lodge, Ashnil Aruba, Sentrim Camp or Satao Safari Camp. Each one is positioned differently within the park, so your choice affects which areas you'll explore on the game drives.

What's the difference between a private tour and a group safari?

This is a private tour, meaning the minivan or Jeep is yours alone for the full three days. You set the pace, choose where to stop for photos, and decide how long to stay at each site. Group safaris share a vehicle with other travelers and follow a fixed itinerary.
