The experience

You're picked up from your hotel at 6 a.m. and driven along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, arriving at Bachuma gate by 9 a.m. to start your first game drive. The van has a pop-up roof so you can stand and watch without obstruction as you pass Aruba Dam (a British colonial-era waterhole from 1952 where elephants gather to drink), and other spots across the park. After the morning drive you check into Voi Safari Lodge in time for lunch, rest until 4 p.m., then head out again for an evening game drive until sundown. Dinner and overnight stay follow at the lodge.

Mudanda Rock is one of the park's defining landmarks: a natural formation that towers above a dam and draws elephant herds daily. The herds here are known for their size and for the red dust they pick up from wallowing and dust-bathing in the park's various water points. A visible detail that makes them stand out from elephants elsewhere. On day two you have breakfast, a short game drive on the way to the gate, then the drive back to Diani Beach or the airport, arriving in the afternoon.
