Day 1: Travel and game drives at saltlick lodge

The experience

The day starts at 5:00 am with pickup from your Diani Beach hotel. The drive to Taita Hills takes roughly five and a half hours, arriving around 10:30 am. Your first game drive runs from arrival until 1:30 pm, when you head to Saltlick Lodge for check-in and lunch. After two hours to rest, an evening drive takes you back into the sanctuary until sunset, hunting for lions, elephants, ostriches, zebras and other wildlife before dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day two reverses the rhythm. An early morning game drive departs before breakfast, when animals are most active. You return to the lodge to eat, then begin the journey back to Diani Beach around 9:30 am, arriving at your hotel by 2:30 pm. The lodge itself sits at a salt lick, a natural draw for wildlife, so sightings happen from the property as well as during the drives. Bottled water is provided throughout. Meals are buffet-style at the lodge.

You pick your vehicle at checkout: a safari jeep (landcruiser 4x4) or a van. Both carry you on the same routes and stops. A live English-speaking guide leads all three game drives. Optional add-ons available at booking include a night game drive, additional soft drinks and alcoholic beverages beyond what the full board provides, and gratuities for the guide and lodge staff.
