The experience
Pickup starts at 5 a.m. from your Diani Beach hotel, and the drive takes you inland to Tsavo East National Park's Bachuma gate. Once inside, the safari begins straight away. Two separate game drives with a lunch break in between. The morning drive runs until midday. After you eat, the afternoon drive continues until you exit the park. A certified guide leads both, pointing out the wildlife and navigating the landscape.
The park's red elephants are the draw here (their skin takes on that rust color from the soil), but the day also holds lions lounging in the heat, buffalo herds, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, gazelles and if you're lucky, leopards moving through the scrub. What you see depends on where the animals are that day. The guide knows the park and reads the signs, but sightings are never guaranteed. The landscape itself is untouched wilderness, and the scale of it changes how the day feels.
You're back at your hotel by evening. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one other language depending on availability, and lunch is included in the price. Bring sun protection, binoculars if you have them, and clothes that layer: mornings are cool, afternoons are hot.

Is this one for you?An 8-hour day means you leave before dawn and return by evening, which works if your schedule is flexible in the morning but you need to be back for dinner or an evening activity. If you need a shorter outing or prefer to sleep past 5 a.m., look for a half-day option instead.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What time does the safari start and when do I get back to Diani Beach?
Pickup is at 5 a.m. from your hotel, and you return by evening after the afternoon game drive ends and the drive back to the coast is complete.
What are the red elephants I keep hearing about?
Tsavo East's elephants roll in the reddish soil of the park, which stains their skin that distinctive rust color. It's a natural behavior and a visual that makes them stand out from elephants elsewhere.
Can I really see lions and leopards in one day?
Lions are more commonly spotted lounging or moving through the park. Leopards are elusive and sightings depend on luck and timing. The guide will search for both, but neither is guaranteed on any single day.
Is lunch included, and what about water or snacks?
Lunch is included and served during the midday break. Bring your own water and snacks for the drives, or ask your hotel or the operator what additional provisions are available.
Do I need any experience or fitness level for this tour?
The safari suits all physical fitness levels. You spend most of the day seated in a vehicle, though there may be short walks at stops. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with a baby.
