The experience

You're picked up from your Nairobi accommodation at 7 am and driven south across the Athi Plain, home to the Masai, arriving at Amboseli mid-day. After a rest at Wildebeest Eco Camp or a similar lodge, you head out on your first game drive in a customized van built for easy viewing from every seat. The evening light brings out the wildlife: you'll see herds of free-ranging African elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, lions, monkeys, zebras, hyenas and antelope moving through their natural habitat while Mount Kilimanjaro rises in the distance.

Day two starts before dawn. The early-morning game drive is when the animals are most active (hunting, playing, crossing the plains), and when Mount Kilimanjaro itself is at its most dramatic, lit by the sunrise and turning from purple hues to pink snow. You'll see the iconic sight the park is known for: herds of African elephants crossing the Amboseli plains with the mountain behind them. After the drive, you return to camp for breakfast, then head back to Nairobi.
