The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Dead Sea hotel and a drive to Amman's hilltop Citadel, where your private guide walks you through Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic ruins stacked on the rock. You'll see the Temple of Hercules and colonnaded streets before heading down to the Roman Amphitheater, a 6,000-seat arena built in the 2nd century to face north: a deliberate design choice to shield spectators from the fiercest midday heat. The guide explains how it once anchored the ancient city of Philadelphia, which stood where Amman's modern capital now rises.

From Amman, you drive north through passing towns and green landscapes to Jerash, the Decapolis city that was buried under sand for centuries until its discovery in 1806. The ruins are among the best preserved in the Middle East. You'll walk through the ancient city gate and explore on foot: arches, theaters, the elegant colonnaded street, the intriguing Oval Plaza with its egg-shaped frame of standing columns, and the Temples of Artemis and Zeus. Your guide tells the story of Jerash's heyday as one of the Roman Empire's most prosperous outposts, and you have free time to wander and photograph before the return drive to your Dead Sea hotel.

The tour runs 8 hours total in a private, air-conditioned vehicle sized to your group. Your driver doubles as your guide and speaks English. Spanish and French are available by request. Entrance fees to the Citadel, Amphitheater and Jerash are included in the standard option. If you hold a Jordan Pass, book the pass-holder option instead and the operator will reimburse the entrance fees. On-board Wi-Fi is included. You can request airport pickup or drop-off, and infant car seats and strollers are available. Contact the operator a day before to confirm your pickup time.
