The experience
The tour starts with a morning pickup from your Dead Sea hotel and moves through Amman's layers in sequence. Your driver doubles as a guide and speaks English (Spanish and French available on request), so you hear the city's history as you travel, from its roots before 3500 B.C. through the Roman occupation and Byzantine period. The vehicle is air-conditioned and sized for your group, which matters on a day that covers this much ground.
The stops themselves are the draw. The King Abdullah Mosque stands out for its blue mosaic dome. You'll see it alongside the nearby Coptic Church. The Amman Citadel sits on a hilltop overlooking the whole city and holds Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic ruins, plus the Archaeological Museum with artifacts from across Jordan. The Roman Theater, built in the 2nd century, could once hold 6,000 spectators and still dominates its hillside. From there you move to the Museum of Popular Traditions (traditional dress and jewelry), pass the Raghadan Palace, the burial place of King Hussein, and get free time in the vibrant downtown markets. Rainbow Street, Amman's arts and shopping quarter, comes next, then the upscale neighborhoods of Abdoun and Swefieh with their luxury malls and private villas. The Jordan Museum traces the country's history, and the Royal Automobile Museum in King Hussein Park showcases vehicles from King Hussein bin Ali's 1916 arrival to modern sports cars.
The 8-hour frame is tight enough that you move steadily but not rushed. Entrance fees to the major sites are included (except for Jordan Pass holders, who pay separately). You can add a traditional Arabic mezze lunch at a local restaurant (hummus, starters, salads, bread, barbecued chicken and beef), or upgrade to a Turkish bath with steam, scrub and massage before heading back to your hotel. Note that both the Jordan Museum and Royal Automobile Museum close on Tuesdays, so check your date before booking. Dress code applies at the mosque: women should cover arms, legs and hair. Men wear normal shirt and trousers.
