The experience
Unomachi sits where the Uwajima Domain once stationed its only post town, and the buildings still show it: white-walled structures and lattice windows from the mid-Edo period onward line the streets. You arrive at Uwaminzukan, the meeting point, and from there the guide leads you to Kaimei School, where you step into a classroom frozen in the Meiji era and experience what students learned there in 1882. It is not a lecture. You sit where they sat and get a sense of the place as it was.
After the school, you return to Uwaminzukan for a proper museum tour, then walk the town itself with your guide. The route takes in a soy sauce shop, a traditional inn, Suemitsu House, and the Pioneer Memorial Hall: stops chosen to show how the town worked and who lived there. The guide is private to your group, so the pace and the questions are yours.
Lunch happens at Ikedaya, a sake shop that closed and reopened as a restaurant. The meal is vegetarian, built around seasonal local vegetables and rice cooked in a kama pot: the kind of pot that sits over a fire. You eat in a warm room that still holds the shape of what it was. After lunch, you are free to go. The tour ends there.
What’s included

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you are traveling as a small group or family and want an unhurried, private experience: the guide stays with you alone, so the pace and the stops are yours to shape. The Meiji classroom and the sake-shop lunch are the kind of details that take time to absorb, and a private group gives you room to linger and ask questions without moving on to the next group's schedule.
