Step-by-step itinerary
Charcoal kiln, shrine visit, coffee time
- Tour charcoal kiln workshop
- Visit Yuge shrine and learn history
- Enjoy coffee and local bread
The experience
The tour starts at Yamada-ya, a working charcoal kiln in the mountain area outside Uchiko Town. The craftsman who runs it walks you through his workshop and explains how he makes the charcoal used in Japanese tea ceremonies: the kind that lights cleanly and burns at the right temperature for heating water. He talks about how this craft connects to the life of the mountain community, the seasonal rhythms that shape it, and what happens to the forest when charcoal-making stops. You see the kiln itself and watch how the charcoal is lit and used, not as a museum piece but as something he works with every day.
From the kiln, your guide takes you to Yuge shrine, a landmark in the Ishidatami district. The shrine sits across a pond, and you walk to it on a covered bridge. The roof is part of what makes it distinctive. Your guide explains the shrine's history and how it fits into local life. After that, you visit Seiryu-en park to see the landscape around the area.
The tour ends back at the kiln with the craftsman. You sit down with a cup of locally roasted coffee and bread baked by a local baker. The charcoal he makes heats the water for the coffee and warms the bread. You're there to chat with him, not to rush through. This is the part where the technical knowledge becomes a conversation, and you see how the work he does connects to everyday moments like this one. A private taxi moves you between stops, and your guide speaks either English or French, depending on which option you book.
