Shikisai-no-Oka & Blue Pond Tour: Flower Fields & Scenic Drive
A single road in Biei dips and rises like a roller coaster, with no actual track.
This full-day tour from Sapporo visits four Hokkaido landmarks: the undulating Roller Coaster Road in Biei, the turquoise-blue Shirogane Pond surrounded by submerged birch trees, seasonal flower fields at either Shikisai-no-Oka or Farm Tomita depending on the day of the week, and Ningle Terrace, a forest of handcrafted artisan cottages. A live guide in English, Japanese or Chinese leads the route. Optional buffet lunch with or without ice cream is available at checkout. The tour runs nine to ten hours including travel time and adjusts for weather and traffic.

The experience
How do you fit four distinct Hokkaido landscapes into a single day from Sapporo? The answer is the route itself. You start on Roller Coaster Road in Biei, a real road that rises and falls so steeply it feels like a theme park ride, with views across rolling hills and open farmland. The drive alone is the draw for photographers, especially in summer and autumn when the fields are at their fullest. From there you move to Shirogane Blue Pond, where the water holds a vivid turquoise color from natural minerals in the ground, and larch and birch trees stand half-submerged along the shore: a setting so otherworldly it stops most visitors for an hour just to walk the paths and shoot photographs.
The flower fields come next, and which one you see depends on the day you book. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday tours head to Shikisai-no-Oka, where rolling hills are planted in lavender, sunflowers and marigolds with views toward the Daisetsuzan Mountains. You can walk the gardens or ride a flower cart if you want to stay seated. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday tours go to Farm Tomita instead, famous for its lavender fields and a café serving lavender ice cream. Both operate from June 1 through October 8, so the flowers change with the season. Lunch is optional at checkout. You can add a buffet with or without ice cream, or skip it entirely.
The tour ends at Ningle Terrace in Furano, a cluster of small wooden cottages set into the forest, each one an artisan workshop where you can make a handcrafted souvenir: candles, wooden items, and other pieces you walk away with. The whole day runs nine to ten hours with travel time built in. A guide in English, Japanese or Chinese leads the route. The schedule shifts for weather and traffic, and late arrivals are not refunded.
