The experience
The day starts with transport from your chosen Sapporo pickup point (Sapporo Station North Exit, MP-Odori Park or Datong Station), and heads northwest toward the Shakotan Peninsula. Cape Kamui is the first major stop: a narrow cape that juts into the Sea of Japan with a scenic walking trail along its ridgeline. The trail leads to a white lighthouse at the tip, surrounded by steep drops and untouched coastal nature. On clear days the sea takes on the vivid turquoise shade locals call "Shakotan Blue." Your guide shares the Ainu legends tied to the cape's name and explains the geography and cultural history of the area.
From Cape Kamui, the route continues to Shimamui Coast, a short drive away. A narrow tunnel carved into the cliffs opens onto an observation deck overlooking a dramatic panorama of turquoise water framed by jagged rock formations. The name comes from the Ainu word Suma Mui, meaning "Rock Bay," and the setting feels far removed from the modern world: waves crash against the rocks below, and the coastline remains wild and untouched. This is a major photo stop and a moment to absorb the raw landscape before moving on.
The tour then turns inland to Yoichi Distillery, birthplace of Japanese whisky and the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru, who brought Scottish distilling methods to Hokkaido in the 1930s. You walk through traditional stone buildings, see copper pot stills and aging warehouses, and learn how Taketsuru adapted Scottish techniques to the region's cool climate and sea breeze. A small museum displays original equipment, and you have the chance to sample some of Nikka's whiskies. The distillery sits in forested hills with the scent of oak barrels in the air: a blend of history, craftsmanship and flavor.
The final stop is Otaru, a port town where Meiji- and Taisho-era warehouses line the canal. These historic stone buildings now house cafés, galleries and craft shops. Your guide walks you through the area, sharing stories of Otaru's rise as a shipping hub and its transformation into a cultural destination. You have time to browse local glassware studios, music box shops or sample regional sweets. The return journey to Sapporo is included, with drop-off at the same location where you started.

Cape Kamui has a scenic walking trail along the ridgeline that leads to the lighthouse at the tip of the cape.
