The experience
The day starts at 8am at Sapporo Station North Exit, where you board an air-conditioned coach and head into the countryside on the Hokkaido Biei Sky Highway: a 2.5-kilometer elevated road famous for its dramatic elevation changes and views of mountains and vast fields. Your guide points out why locals call it the Roller Coaster Road.
The Blue Pond appears first, a natural crater lake formed by volcanic lava flow that shifts from deep blue to turquoise depending on the light and minerals in the water. It was photographed by National Geographic and is one of the most recognizable spots in Hokkaido. From there, the route splits by day of the week: on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, you head to Shikisai-no-Oka, where a 15-hectare flower field spreads across hillsides in bands of color. Different flowers bloom at different times of year. You board the Shikisai-no-Oka NOROCCO, a small tractor-style vehicle, to ride through the fields and take in the scent of flowers and views of snow-capped mountains. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, you visit Farm Tomita instead, one of Japan's oldest flower farms, where lavender dominates in June and the winter greenhouse holds cosmos and other blooms year-round. From the top of the field you see the Furano Basin and Tokachi Mountain Range.
The final stop is Ningle Terrace, a 30-minute walk through a forest of small wooden cottages that sell handmade crafts: glass work, paper art, hand-painted pieces, and items made from dried lavender. The terrace was inspired by a character in a Japanese novel and feels removed from the day's outdoor sites. You return to Sapporo by around 5:30pm. Buffet lunch and a Hami melon are available as add-ons at checkout. If you choose no lunch, bring cash for meals and purchases, as some spots accept only cash.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Chinese and Japanese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3).
What is the Blue Pond and why does it look so blue?
The Blue Pond is a natural crater lake formed by volcanic lava flow near Biei. The water appears intensely blue and turquoise because of minerals and sediment suspended in it. The exact shade shifts with the light and time of day. It was famously photographed by National Geographic and is one of Hokkaido's most photographed sites.
Do I ride the tractor at both flower farms, or only one?
The tractor ride happens at Shikisai-no-Oka, which you visit on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the tour goes to Farm Tomita instead, where you walk through the lavender fields and the winter greenhouse but do not ride a tractor.
What can I buy at Ningle Terrace, and do I need cash?
Ningle Terrace is a collection of wooden craft shops selling handmade items: glass crafts, paper art, hand-painted artwork, and goods made from dried lavender. It is recommended to bring cash, as some shops and restaurants in the area may not accept cards.
What time does the tour leave Sapporo and when do I get back?
Pickup is at 8am at Sapporo Station North Exit Group Bus Stop. The tour returns to Sapporo by around 5:30pm, making the total day about 9 to 9.5 hours. Arrive at least 15 minutes early and look for the guide holding a GOGODAY yellow flag.
Is lunch included, and what are my options?
Lunch is optional and added at checkout. You can choose a buffet lunch with a Hami melon, a buffet lunch alone, or no lunch at all. If you skip lunch, plan to buy meals along the way. Bring cash for restaurants and shops that do not take cards.
