The experience

You meet your guide at a restaurant overlooking Kouri and Yagaji Islands for a quick briefing and a chance to use the restroom and grab a drink. A 5-minute drive takes you to the launch site, where the guide gives you an introduction to kayaking before you push off. From there, the paddle depends on what your group can handle and what the sea allows: you might paddle under the Kouri bridge, navigate the steep jungle walls of Yagaji's sea valley, explore the mangrove-lined river at Nakijin where 10 kilometers of reef and beach coastline open up, or venture into the Haneji Inland Sea past uninhabited islands and mangrove bays. White sand beaches dot the coast throughout.

The guide leads you to a secluded island or beach partway through for a break with tea and local snacks. If the route loops around an island or makes a one-way journey, you paddle back after the break. If you're heading to Nakijin's reef, you'll pass over the coral before landing on a golden sand beach for the stop. The whole outing runs two to three hours depending on which option you choose and how the conditions shape the day.

Kayak seats are 42 centimeters wide, comparable to a budget airline seat, and neoprene footwear protects your feet.
