Day 1 — Kayak tour in Okinawa mangroves and reefs

  • Meet guide at restaurant with views
  • Use restroom and grab a drink
  • Briefing about kayaking experience
  • Drive 5 minutes to launch site
  • Kayak exploring mangroves and reefs
  • Stop on secluded beach for tea
  • Return trip by kayak to start
  • Pass over coral reef and beach

The first thing I noticed was how the air in northern Okinawa feels heavier, almost sticky-sweet near the mangroves. Our guide, Ben, waved us over at this little restaurant above Yagaji Island—he’d already set out iced jasmine tea and grinned when I tried my best “ohayou gozaimasu.” We changed into old shorts in the bathroom (the floor was still damp from someone’s flip-flops) and then followed his tiny van down winding roads to the launch. The sky was that washed-out blue that means it might rain or just stay humid forever.

I’d never kayaked in mangroves before—Ben showed us how to hold the paddles so we wouldn’t splash ourselves too much (I still did). The water under Kouri Bridge was glassy, but you could hear cicadas going nuts in the jungle behind us. Sometimes we drifted quietly past tangled roots poking out of the mud; sometimes a heron would flap up and startle everyone. He pointed out little crabs skittering sideways and explained how these trees survive saltwater—something about their leaves tasting bitter if you’re brave enough to try. I wasn’t.

We stopped at a patch of sand that didn’t look like much from the water but felt soft under bare feet—Ben poured us caffeine-free tea and handed around some kind of sweet potato snack that turned my fingers purple. I kept thinking about how far we were from Naha’s crowds. There was this moment when nobody talked, just wind and distant waves, and honestly I wish I’d taken a photo but also glad I didn’t. Paddling back over Nakijin’s reef, we saw flashes of turquoise fish below—my arms were tired but it felt good, like I’d actually done something with my morning.
