  • Visit Naminoue Shrine by the beach
  • Relax at Fukushuen Garden

The experience

If you land in Okinawa with one free afternoon or want to see Naha's landmarks without renting a car, this tour bundles the major stops into a single day. The guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you to Shuri Castle first: the UNESCO site where the Ryukyu Kingdom's legacy is still visible in the stone walls and architecture. From there, the route moves through Tsuboya Yachimun Street, where potters work in studios and sell their pieces directly, then to Makishi Public Market, the working market where locals buy fish and produce and eat on the second floor. The pace is built around a guide who knows which details matter and can answer questions as you move through each place.

Naminoue Shrine sits on a cliff above a beach (unusual in Japan because most shrines stand inland), and Fukushuen Garden, a Chinese-style landscape with koi ponds, rounds out the afternoon. The eight hours includes driving time between stops, so you're not rushing through any single place but you're also not spending hours at one site. Admission to the attractions and parking fees are covered. You pay separately for lunch at the market or elsewhere, and the guide eats on their own tab as well.

The tour works with a private vehicle, so the route can shift if you want to linger at the pottery street or skip the garden and visit a sake brewery instead. Something the itinerary notes as an option. You'll need to be comfortable sitting in a car for stretches of the day, and the driver will pick you up and drop you back at your hotel when it's done.
