The Experience

“Don’t worry about getting it perfect—just feel the rhythm,” our instructor said, grinning as he handed me a pair of bachi sticks. The studio in Takatsuki smelled faintly of wood and something earthy, maybe from the drums themselves—they’re carved from single trees, which I didn’t know was so rare. We’d come straight from Kyoto Station by train and then a quick cab ride (the driver nodded along to my mangled Japanese greetings). It was humid outside but inside, the air felt thick with quiet excitement and that soft tap-tap of people warming up their wrists.

I liked that before we even touched the drums, we did this little calligraphy ritual—writing our wishes on white hachimaki headbands. My kanji looked like chicken scratches but nobody minded; Li laughed when I tried to say “ganbatte” in Japanese. Then came the real show: our teacher played a piece that made my chest rattle. You could feel how Taiko isn’t just music here—it’s history, festivals, even something spiritual. I caught myself holding my breath during his solo.

Learning the basics was sweaty work (I’m not exactly coordinated), but everyone cheered each other on. The instructor adjusted things for us—some were kids, some older folks—and by the end we actually played together without totally falling apart. There was this moment where all our drumbeats lined up and I swear it felt like we’d known each other longer than an hour. Afterward we took photos in traditional happi coats—mine kept sliding off one shoulder—and I still think about that group energy whenever I hear drums now.
