The Experience

What does it feel like to walk through Kyoto dressed as a warlord? The experience starts indoors: you'll write your name or a favorite phrase in kanji on a gun-sen (war fan), then the staff will fit you with high-quality armor tailored to your size. Once dressed, you move into a hall lined with 20 authentic suits of armor and taste premium matcha—the same grade served at the G7 Summit—with sweets. No preparation needed; you arrive empty-handed and the guide handles everything.

Then comes the march. You'll raise a traditional battle cry with the group and walk toward the Sanjo Riverbank in full gear, moving through Kyoto's streets as samurai did centuries ago. The riverbank is where the photoshoot happens: individual and group shots against the Kamo River, with the guide capturing the moment. You leave with the war fan and tabi socks you made, plus the photos from the day.

Lockers are available for valuables and large suitcases cannot be stored, so pack light. The whole activity runs 90 minutes with an English or Japanese-speaking guide. Children from age 6 can participate; infants sit on an adult's lap during the matcha portion.
