The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so awkward at first — standing in front of Yasaka Shrine, fiddling with my sleeves while our photographer, Yuki, adjusted her camera and grinned at us like we were old friends. She’d picked this spot because the early morning light hits the shrine’s orange gates just right (she was totally right). There was incense drifting from somewhere, and a group of schoolkids rushed past us, giggling behind their hands. I tried to relax but kept thinking about what to do with my hands — Yuki just laughed and said, “Just be yourselves.” That helped.

We wandered through Maruyama Park next. The cherry blossoms weren’t quite out yet — just little pink hints here and there — but the air had that damp spring smell. Yuki pointed out an old tea house where she used to come as a kid. She told us stories about the Gion area and how couples sneak off for photos in kimono (she said it’s kind of a thing). At one point she crouched down to get a shot of us on this narrow Kyoto street, and an old man passing by nodded at us with a sort of knowing smile. I still think about that moment — it felt like we belonged there for a second.

The whole private vacation photography session lasted maybe an hour and a half? It went by weirdly fast. We could pick the spots — Arashiyama bamboo forest or Fushimi Inari if we wanted — but honestly I liked sticking close to Gion and Higashiyama because it felt less rushed. At one point I tried to say “thank you” in Japanese (arigatou gozaimasu) and probably butchered it; Yuki just grinned wider. By the end we’d stopped worrying about looking perfect — she caught us laughing at something dumb my partner said about the pigeons being “too polite.”
