The Experience

You'll meet at Starbucks Kyoto Sanjo Karasuma Building at 10 AM and walk to Rokkakudo Temple first, a quiet start before the markets open. From there the route moves through Yaoyaichi, a neighborhood market where you'll see Kyoto's seasonal produce and sample bread that's popular with locals. By 11:30 AM you're in Daimaru Department Store's basement — the depachika — where the gourmet food hall holds fresh sushi, meat buns (nikuman), and wagashi from a centuries-old shop. The tastings shift with what's available and what the group wants to try, so no two tours taste exactly the same.

Nishiki Market itself, known as "Kyoto's Kitchen," is where the tour spends its longest stretch. The narrow pedestrian street fills with stalls selling everything from pickled vegetables to skewered wagyu beef and fresh sashimi. Your guide points out which shops are worth stopping at and what makes each one worth the line, then you move through at your own pace, tasting as you go. By 2 PM you've walked to Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, a small shrine tucked into the market itself, where the tour ends.
