The experience
You arrive at Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal before dawn, meet your guide (a certified water rescuer), and get fitted with a life jacket and paddle. The choice between SUP and canoe is yours at checkout: SUP lets you stand and see farther across the water. Canoe seats you lower and more stable, which younger kids and anyone preferring a seated paddle often choose. Either way, you're on the river as the sky lightens, moving through mangrove forest so quietly that you hear the birds before you see them.
The sunrise happens while you're on the water, not from a viewpoint on shore. You watch it from your board or canoe, the light hitting the mangroves and the river at once, and the guide times the paddle so you're positioned to see it fully. The whole outing runs 90 minutes from meeting to return, which fits before a morning flight or into a day with other plans. You get the photo data afterward, so the sunrise moment is yours to keep.
The operator is Okinawa-certified and has guided over 500,000 guests. All guides are water-rescue trained. Life jackets are mandatory. The guide will not take anyone out without one. Wear swimwear, use the restroom before you arrive (there's none on-site), and bring no alcohol. If the weather turns unsafe, the tour cancels free of charge with notice by the day before. At least two guests are required to run the tour. If you're booking solo, confirm availability when you reserve.

Is this one for you?Pick the SUP course if you want to stand and see farther across the water and mangroves. Pick the canoe course if you prefer sitting lower and more stable, or if you're bringing a young child who may feel more secure in a boat. Both catch the sunrise from the water and both run the same 90 minutes, so the choice is comfort and perspective.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Japanese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I do this tour if I've never paddled before?
Yes. The mangrove river is calm and the guide leads the whole time. No paddling experience is needed. Children as young as 3 can join, though kids under 12 may be guided into a canoe instead of a SUP depending on sea conditions and group size that day.
What's the difference between the SUP and canoe on this tour?
SUP (stand-up paddleboard) has you standing, which gives a higher vantage point to see the sunrise and the mangroves around you. Canoe seats you in a boat, lower and more stable, which many people find easier for a long paddle and which younger children often prefer. Both are included in the tour price. You pick which one suits you at checkout.
Will I actually see the sunrise, or just the sky getting lighter?
The guide times the paddle so you're on the water when the sun rises above the horizon. You watch it from your SUP or canoe as it clears the mangroves and hits the river. The exact timing shifts with the season, but the tour is built around catching that moment on the water.
How do I get to Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal?
Public transportation options are available nearby. If you book a late tour (after 5:00 PM), go directly to the terminal. For earlier departures, meeting details will be sent to you by the day before. Register a Japan-based phone number or email when you book so you receive the confirmation.
What's included in the price?
The SUP or canoe, paddle, life jacket, guide, liability insurance and experience fee are all included. You also get photo data from the tour and a special offer page with restaurant coupons redeemable in Ishigaki.
