The experience
Seven and a half hours takes you through Hiroshima's central peace sites and across to Miyajima Island. Your guide meets you at your hotel and walks you first to the Atomic Bomb Dome, the prefectural hall whose structure survived the blast and now stands as a UNESCO World Heritage symbol of the city's message. The guide explains the history while you reflect, then moves with you into the adjacent Peace Memorial Park, a quiet green space built over what was once a busy commercial downtown. The park's monuments and grounds carry the story of those lost and the hope for peace that followed.
The Peace Memorial Museum comes next, where you'll see belongings left by victims, photographs of the devastation, and survivor testimony. Your guide steps back here, letting you move through the exhibits and process what you're seeing without narration. After the museum, you head to Miyajimaguchi Pier for the ferry to Miyajima Island. The crossing itself is part of the day: time to sit with what you've learned before moving into the island's different character.
Miyajima opens with Itsukushima Shrine and its famous floating torii gate, the red wooden structure that appears to hover on the water. The shrine itself spreads across boardwalks and pillars above the sea, connecting a prayer hall, main hall and noh theater stage. Daiganji Temple, dedicated to the Goddess of eloquence and wisdom, sits nearby. The island's shopping street fills with roaming deer, shops and cafes where you can wander at your own pace, stop for a snack or buy souvenirs. The ferry back to Hiroshima is included, as is the return transport to your hotel.
