The experience
The Peace Memorial Park spans over 120,000 square meters in what was once Hiroshima's political and commercial center. The reason it was targeted in 1945. Four years after the bombing, the city chose not to rebuild but to dedicate the land to peace memorials instead. Walking through the park's trees, lawns and paths, you'll see the contrast between this quiet space and the downtown area surrounding it. Your guide will explain what stood here before and how the city transformed the site into what it is today.
Hiroshima Castle, also called the Carp Castle for the fish in its moats, was built in 1589 by feudal lord Mori Terumoto and destroyed in the same 1945 bombing as the rest of the city. The castle grounds include a shrine, historic ruins and reconstructed Ninomaru buildings that remain open to visitors. Note that the main keep has been closed to the public since March 2026 due to safety concerns, though you can still view the castle from the outside. Shukkei-en Garden, designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Historical Parks, shows how a Japanese garden captures natural beauty in a small, contained space. Which sites you visit depends on what interests you most. Your guide will discuss this when you confirm your reservation.
A Government Licensed guide who speaks English will meet you on foot within a designated area of Hiroshima and walk the route with you. Because this is a private tour, the guide can teach you about Hiroshima's history and culture in the way that works for you, rather than following a fixed script for a group. The four-hour window gives you time to move between sites without rushing, though the actual stops depend on your pace and questions.

What is the Peace Memorial Park and why was it built there?
The Peace Memorial Park occupies the site of Hiroshima's former political and commercial center, chosen as the bombing target in 1945. Four years after the attack, the city decided to preserve the land as a memorial to peace rather than redevelop it, creating a 120,000-square-meter park with trees, lawns and walking paths that contrast sharply with the surrounding downtown.
Can I visit inside Hiroshima Castle on this tour?
Hiroshima Castle's main keep has been closed to the public since March 2026 for safety reasons, so you'll view the castle from the outside. The castle grounds, including the shrine, historic ruins and reconstructed Ninomaru buildings, remain open and accessible to visitors.
How many sites will I see, and can I choose which ones?
You'll see an average of two sites from the itinerary (the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle and Shukkei-en Garden) over the four-hour tour. Your guide will discuss which sites suit your interests when you confirm your reservation, so the route is customized to what you want to learn about.
What's included in the tour price, and what do I pay separately?
The tour includes the licensed guide and the four-hour walking experience. Entrance fees to the sites, meals and any personal expenses are not included in the price and are your responsibility.
