The experience

Miyajima comes first. You'll see the Giant Torii Gate from a vantage point where Pancho explains its hidden history and why it was built on the water, then enter Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a design unlike other Japanese shrines. Daisho-in Temple, Pancho's personal favorite, sits nearby. Optional stops include the five-story pagoda and Senjokaku Pavilion. The ferry ride between Hiroshima and Miyajima is part of the day, not separate logistics you arrange.

In Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, you walk past the ground-level monument marking where the bomb detonated in the air, then to the Atomic Bomb Dome: one of the few buildings that survived the blast. Pancho shares how it endured, why Hiroshima was chosen as a target, and how locals feel about its preservation. You'll also visit the Children's Peace Monument, inspired by Sadako Sasaki's paper cranes, the Memorial Cenotaph, and the Flame of Peace. A quieter, lesser-known site rounds out the park visit, showing Hiroshima's daily life and resilience today. Pancho does not guide inside the Peace Memorial Museum. Instead, he provides historical context and personal stories beforehand so you enter with deeper understanding, then visit at your own pace for private reflection.

Lunch happens near the park during a break. Ramen, sushi, okonomiyaki, tsukemen, café meals and onigiri are available. The park area has more vegan and gluten-free options than Miyajima, though Pancho will guide you to the best local spot based on your dietary needs if you notify him in advance. The tour runs about seven and a half hours total, including travel time between sites.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 12 years); Infant (under 6): free.

What is the Giant Torii Gate at Miyajima, and why does it look like it's floating?

The Giant Torii Gate is one of Japan's most photographed Shinto structures, marking the entrance to Itsukushima Shrine. It appears to float on the ocean depending on the sea tide. At high tide it sits in water, at low tide you can walk around its base. Pancho shares its history, construction and the reason it was built on the water rather than on land.

Is the Peace Memorial Museum included in the tour?

No, the museum is not part of the guided tour. Pancho believes the museum experience is deeply personal and requires private reflection, so he provides historical context and personal stories at the Dome and Cenotaph beforehand, then you visit the museum independently at your own pace after the tour ends.

What does the tour include, and what costs extra?

The tour includes Pancho's guide fee, all JR train and local bus fares, round-trip ferry between Hiroshima and Miyajima, and entry to Itsukushima Shrine. Lunch is extra and you choose from local restaurants near the park. Gratuities are not included.

Can Pancho accommodate dietary needs like vegan or gluten-free meals?

Yes. Pancho adapts lunch to your requirements, though vegan and gluten-free options are extremely limited on Miyajima Island and require advance notice. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park area has more variety. Tell Pancho your needs when you book so he can plan the best local spot.

How long is the full day, and does it fit if I'm traveling from another city?

The tour runs about seven and a half hours from start to finish, including travel time to and from Miyajima. If you're on a tight schedule (for example, a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka), Pancho can adjust the itinerary and drop you at Hiroshima Station or another point to catch your onward train.
