The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous stepping off at Harajuku Station—like I’d landed in the middle of someone else’s daydream. But our guide (Yuka, with the brightest sneakers I’ve ever seen) just grinned and led us straight into the blur of Takeshita Street. The air smelled like sweet waffles and something vaguely floral—maybe someone’s perfume?—and there were so many colors everywhere it almost felt like being inside a candy store. We stopped to watch a group of teens posing for selfies in matching pastel skirts; they waved when Yuka called out “kawaii!” I tried to blend in but probably looked more like a lost aunt.

We ducked into this tiny café where the barista made my latte look like Totoro—honestly, I didn’t want to drink it at first. The foam was so detailed, even had little whiskers. Yuka laughed when I tried to say “arigatou” properly (I think I mangled it). Then came the animal cafe part—I thought it’d be kind of cheesy but nope, holding a hedgehog is weirdly calming. Their little noses twitch if you’re quiet enough. There were hamsters too, and one girl next to me was whispering to hers like they were old friends.

After that we wandered through shops stacked with stickers and keychains—somehow I ended up buying socks covered in cartoon sushi. Omotesando was our last big stop; all tree-lined and fancy but still somehow relaxed after the chaos of Takeshita. The light was softer there, people strolling instead of rushing. I kept thinking about how everyone seemed to have their own style here—no one really stared or cared what you wore. It made me feel oddly free for a tourist.
