The experience
The driver meets you in Sapporo and takes you south to Furano, a region famous for its flower fields and lavender blooms. Before the tour starts, you choose which three to four stops matter most to you: lavender farms where the purple, white and orange flowers create a rainbow effect in mid-July through August; Ningle Terrace, a forest shopping area of 15 log houses where you can make candles or paper crafts; the cheese factory where you watch production through glass and can try gelato made from local milk; or Furano Flower Land, a sprawling garden where lupines, poppies, lilies and cosmos bloom in sequence from June through September. The driver knows the timing and the crowds, so morning visits to the lavender fields happen when the light is best and fewer people are there.
Biei, a neighboring area, adds its own stops: Shikisai-no-oka, a fifteen-hectare panoramic garden with dozens of flower species across the seasons; Furano wine country, where a brick factory shows the fermentation process and lets you taste what is made there; and Shirahige Falls, a thirty-meter waterfall fed by hot springs upstream that turns the Biei River a striking cobalt blue. The blue lake near the falls is most vivid on clear mornings when the aluminum from the springs catches the sun. In winter, ice and mist around the waterfall create a different kind of view. Your driver can recommend the best time of day for each site and adjust the route if you want to linger somewhere or skip ahead.
The tour lasts ten hours total and works for groups of up to eight passengers, depending on which vehicle size you book. Car seats and booster seats are available if you are traveling with young children, though rear-facing seats are not. Let the operator know when you book. Entrance fees to gardens and attractions, lunch and other personal costs are separate from the tour price.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years): free; Infant (under 6): free.
What are the lavender fields like when I visit in July?
The lavender blooms from mid-July through August, and the fields produce seven colors of flowers together (purple lavender, white baby's breath, orange California poppies and others) that create a rainbow effect. The farm has been producing lavender since 1958 and is the view most people remember from Furano. Four kilometers away, Lavender East grows fields of just lavender, which is especially striking during this window.
Can I make something at Ningle Terrace, or is it just shopping?
Ningle Terrace is both. The forest shopping area has 15 log houses with different themes (an Owl's Forest for owl products, a Glass House for ice and snowflake items), and you can make your own candles, instruments or paper crafts. There is also a coffee shop and a shop selling handmade postcards. When the sun sets, the log houses and walkways are lit up.
What can I do at the cheese factory?
The Furano cheese factory lets you watch cheese production through glass and see the history of cheesemaking on the second floor. You can try milking a mechanical cow, taste homemade gelatos in flavors like pumpkin and sugar cane, and see rare cheese varieties. If you book ahead, you can also make your own cheese, ice cream or butter.
Is Shirahige Falls worth the stop if I am short on time?
Shirahige Falls is a thirty-meter waterfall where underground water seeps from rocks and flows into the Biei River, turning it cobalt blue. The waterfall is classified as a rare submerged flow explosion in Japan. The view from the nearby Blue River bridge is also recommended, and in winter the contrast between the waterfall's streaks, snow and rock creates a different kind of drama.
Do I need to decide on my stops before the tour starts?
Yes. Before the tour begins, you select three to four stops from the list of attractions in Furano and Biei. The driver will customize the route based on your choices and can recommend the best time of day to visit each one.
