The experience

You arrive in Asakusa and have a free afternoon, or you're staying nearby and want to make something with your hands instead of walking past more temples. This workshop gives you an hour to build a functional souvenir that's yours alone. You'll pick from over 10 types of wood, each with its own color and scent, then move to the workbench where a local staff member walks you through shaping the wood with professional tools, sanding it smooth to fit your grip, and finishing the surface. The whole process happens in the same room, so there's no waiting between steps.

The guide speaks fluent English and explains the cultural role chopsticks play in Japanese daily life as you work. Once your pair is shaped and sanded, you can add a laser engraving (a name, a date, a word that matters to you), to make it truly personal. A staff member photographs you and anyone with you against the view of Tokyo Skytree and the Asakusa skyline. You walk out with finished chopsticks ready to use or wrap as a gift, plus directions to the must-see spots in the neighborhood if you want to explore after.

The workshop sits in a neighborhood with public transit nearby, so you don't need a car or a guide to get there. All tools and materials are provided. Three types of wood are included in the base price, and you can upgrade to premium woods if you want a rarer grain or finish. The space is wheelchair accessible, and the staff can accommodate families with small children or anyone joining solo.

What’s included

  • All tools and materials for shaping and sanding.
  • choice of 12 wood types (three included, premium options available).
  • English-speaking local guide leading you through each step.
  • your finished personalized chopsticks to take home the same day.
  • optional laser engraving with a name or word.
  • a commemorative photo with the Asakusa skyline and Tokyo Skytree in the background.
  • tips on must-see spots in the neighborhood.
